(TMU) — There’s plenty of charm to be found in old-fashioned bookstore cafes. From the invigorating aroma of freshly-brewed coffee mingling with the familiar smell of dusty old books to the excitement of hunting for rare treasures, the independent bookstore is a total sensory experience that can never be replaced by online retailers like Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
But for Otis & Clementine’s Books & Coffee in Nova Scotia, Canada, the calm and cozy magic of the vintage book shop is being combined with dozens of adorable kittens that are being offered for adoption.
What this means is that as you sit in the bookstore’s comfortable, soft chairs and read, a little feline friend may decide to hop into your lap and happily join you.
The kittens were all rescued by the South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia rescue group, which has been sending the young kittens to Otis & Clementine’s so they can have an enjoyable and nurturing place to live before they are able to settle down into a forever home.
Shop owner Ellen Helmke decided to offer her shop to the fostering program after realizing that she had more than enough space to share with the little kittens.
And so far it’s proven to be a massive success. Many customers arrive with the intention of just grabbing a fresh cup of joe and a new read but instead end up falling head over heels in love with a kitten whom they later adopt. Others come to specifically see the cats.
Helmke told Global News:
“People come here specifically to see the cats, and then some people just wander in to look at books and discover there are kittens.
Either way, the response has been really great—I mean, who doesn’t love kittens, right?”
At least 30 cats have been adopted through the bookstore so far with two permanent kitties—baby Wick and her mother Abba—residing at the shop.
The cats, who can be seen slinking throughout the shop and tumbling through cardboard boxes, also gain needed exposure to people—making them well-prepared to socialize with patrons and charm their ways into their future homes.
Helmke added:
“We have a hundred per cent adoption rate, which is fantastic.
I’m so happy to make my customers happy when they come in and they’re just thrilled to see a kitten they weren’t expecting.
It’s amazing and makes me happy to come to work.”
