Nabel Alabdalla – “History Will Not Be Erased by a Fanatic and War Criminal”

The following is a statement from the commander of the National Defence Forces in the Syrian Christian city of Al Sqeilbiyyeh, Nabel Alabdalla. Nabel is planning to build a symbolic version of Hagia Sophia in his city on the land that he and his soldiers have defended for 10 years against the terrorist gangs dominated by Al Qaeda and sponsored by the US Coalition, including Turkey (a NATO member state)

After reading the misrepresentative media reports and misleading analysis regarding the building of a small version of the historic Hagia Sophia on our land in Al Sqeilbiyyeh after the neo-Ottoman occupation of the original temple, I would like to make the following statement to clarify things:

1. The idea arose as a reminder and a warning that a monument to human and spiritual heritage could not be tampered with by a fanatic and war criminal.
2. Hagia Sophia was originally built as a church and was not a temple for any other religion prior to that. It was a symbol of Christianity for thousands of years before the Ottoman occupied it by force and because he is a barbarian extremist, he converted it to a mosque – the opposite to what Al-Farouk (Omar bin Al-Khattab) did in Jerusalem.
3. Some reactions have demonstrated that fanaticism in general and the delusional Ottoman Empire and the Caliphate are still influencing some minds.
4. The idea was my personal vision and nobody has joined me in this project, it will be built on my land and I will personally finance it.
5. The initiative won the blessing of the Patriarch of Antioch and the rest of the eastern Greek Orthodox, this is the right of any citizen who believes in their religion, their country and who has belonged to this land for thousands of years and to their Christianity for more than two thousand years.
6. Al Sqeilbiyyeh, our beloved city has sacrificed a hundred and sixty martyrs from among our young men, women and children. We have received more than seven thousand rockets but we have been victorious and we have resisted these attacks thanks to our glorious Syrian Arab Army and its commander in chief, President Bashar Al Assad. The city deserves a memorial and this church will be dedicated to prayers for the martyrs and to remember their names for eternity engraved in the marble of its walls.
7. Our Russian friends heard about this initiative from the media, so they mentioned the project to the Duma and this is evidence of their opposition to Erdogan’s actions. However, the church will be built only with hands from Sqeilbiyyeh and with Syrian stone, on my land and I will finance the project personally – just as our ancestors preserved our heritage and our land, so we shall do the same.
8. Some sick individuals are trying to suggest that the building of the church is some kind of “Russian protection for the Christians of the Middle East. Our Russian allies have provided and are providing support to Syria and to the Army. Our Christianity is part of our Syrian identity, we will belong to this earth for eternity and our existence upon this land is timeless, our faith is righteous and our church bells will ring forever.
9. We have completed the design and we will soon lay the foundation stone and start the building work. Every civilised human being will be invited to pray in this small church which will immortalise “divine wisdom” and the souls of the martyrs.
10. Al Sqeilbiyyeh is a city of resistance and of stubborn life which has not been defeated by the Ottoman legions. It will stay a steadfast Syrian city and a sanctuary for all who believe in one God, the God who gathers all Syrians together, and the terrain that protects our heritage in Great Apamea. Because we genuinely believe in this principle, we have warmly welcomed more than four thousand Syrians displaced from Idlib by the Ottoman terrorism.

Hagia Sophia.

Soon the Hagia Sophia bell tower and bell will rise above Sqeilbiyyeh to ring out the message that an ignorant, fanatical murderer will never be able to erase divine wisdom and that Syria will remain, forever, the cradle of Christianity and civilization, regardless of those who would see it destroyed.

قائد الدفاع الوطني في السقيلبية
بعد أن قرأنا التحليلات والتخيلات والتخرصات عن مشروع بناء كنيسة صغيرة (كابيلا) على اسم كنيسة آيا صوفيا المحتلة من قبل العثمانيين الجدد ،على أرض خاصة بنا في السقيلبية يهمنا إعلان مايلي:
١-جاءت الفكرة كنوع من الرد التذكيري وتنشيط الذاكرة بأن معلماً من التراث الإنساني والروحي لا يستطيع متعصب وقاتل العبث به.
٢- بنيت آيا صوفيا ككنيسة ولم تكن معبداً لديانة أخرى قبل ، وكانت رمزاً للمسيحية طيلة ألف عام، والعثماني احتلها عنوة، ولأنه متأسلم بربري حوّلها إلى مسجد ، على عكس ما فعل الفاروق في القدس.
٣- أظهرت بعض ردود الأفعال أن التعصب عام وأن وهم العثمنة والخلافة ما يزال يعبث بعقول البعض.
٤- فكرة الكنيسة تعود لي شخصياً ولا دخل لأحد بها وهي ستقام حتماً على أرضي الخاصة وبمالي الخاص.
٥- حازت الفكرة على مباركة غبطة بطريرك أنطاكيا وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس، وهي حق طبيعي لأي مواطن مؤمن بدينه ووطنه وانتمائه لهذه الأرض منذ آلاف السنين ، ولمسيحيته منذ ألفي عام ونيّف.
٦- السقيلبية، مدينتنا الحبيبة، التي قدمت حوالي مئة وستين شهيداً من الشباب والرجال والنساء والأطفال وتلقت أكثر من سبعة آلاف صاروخ ، وصمدت وانتصرت بفضل الجيش السوري العظيم وقائده المفدى، تستحق ويستحقون معلماً تذكارياً وكابيلا للصلاة على أرواحهم ووضع أسمائهم المنيرة على رخام الخلود.
٧- سمع الأصدقاء الروس بموضوع الكنيسة من الإعلام ، وسألوا ووصل الأمر إلى الدوما، وهذا دليل على الاستياء من فعلة أردوغان، لكن الكنيسة ستبنى بكل تأكيد بيد سقلوبية وبحجارة سورية وعلى أرض لي وعلى نفقتي الخاصة، فكما حافظ أجدادنا على الأرض
لنا سنحافظ نحن عليها.
٨- ذهب خيال البعض المريض إلى أن بناء كابيلا هو نوع من ” حماية روسية لمسيحيي المشرق”، إن الأصدقاء الروس قدموا ويقدمون الدعم لسورية وجيشها ، أما مسيحيتنا فهي جزء من سوريتنا، ونحن أهل الأرض قطعاً ووجودنا فيها دهري، وإيماننا قويم وأجراسنا ستقرع أبد الدهر.
٩- انتهينا من موضوع التصميم وقريباً نضع حجر الأساس ونبدأ العمل، وكل إنسان حضاري مدعو للصلاة في هذه الكنيسة الصغيرة، التي ستخلّد “الحكمة الإلهية” وأرواح الشهداء.
١٠- السقيلبية مدينة الحياة العنيدة التي لم تهزمها جحافل المتعثمنين ستبقى مدينة سورية عنيدة ومقراً للإيمان بالله الواحد الذي يجمع السوريين جميعاً، ورابية تحمي الإرث الإنساني في أفاميا العظيمة.
ولأنها كذلك استقبلت بكل ترحاب ، أكثر من أربعة آلاف سوري هجّرهم الإرهاب المتعثمن من إدلب .
١١- قريباً ترتفع قبة وجرسية آيا صوفيا الصغيرة في السقيلبية لتعلن أنه لا يمكن لجاهل ومتعصب وقاتل أن يمحو ذكر الحكمة الإلهية، وأن سوريا ستبقى مهد المسيحية والحضارات ، ولو كره الكارهون.
